7:57 p.m. - No rest for the weary

"One doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time."

- Andre Gide

Oh my God, I finally have my cable internet back, and I feel like a fish that has just been plopped back into water. I survived an entire week without it. I never would have thought it possible.

So today we had an all-day training (they never end!) at our school site. I say 'site' because it's not quite finished. The building is up, but the courtyard is a total mess, the blacktop and playing fields are in pieces, and they are just barely getting furniture into and cleaning up our rooms. Speaking of which, I got to see mine today. It faces the courtyard and has a lot of windows that make it light and airy. It is a huge room, and everything in it is brand-new and state of the art. I managed to sneak a peek right before the contractor started yelling at me for being on a construction site wearing flip-flops and a peasant skirt. Fuck you, mister! Friday will be my only day off, so hopefully I will be able to move stuff into it by then. I've got a budget that the school is fronting, so I'm going shopping at Target and getting a lot of quirky decorations to make it look unique and inviting. Siiiigh. My own classroom. It feels damn good, baby!

We have another training all day tomorrow, which bites rats' tails. It's not that what we're learning isn't valuable, or that I don't enjoy spending time with my colleagues. I'm sure that deep down I appreciate it all, but I'm really tired. I haven't had a break, and I need some rest. However, I really can't stress how much I like hanging out with my colleagues. We have an amazing rapport with each other. Hopefully it isn't just the honeymoon stage and we do indeed have real chemistry. Tomorrow is a parent/teacher/student picnic, so that'll be interesting. It will be good to see students that might be mine (I don't quite know who will be in my classes yet), but I really wish I didn't have to go. I haven't gone to the gym in over a week, and tomorrow night is a cardio salsa class that I was so looking forward to. I won't be able to exercise next week either, as we have a training all week in Oakland. Arrrgh! I sound terrible, but I do go through exercise withdrawels. Anyway, enough bitching and moaning for the day.

I have the brand new Harry Potter book lying on my bed right now, but I haven't had the time to start it. That's pretty frustrating. I think I'm going to do that tonight. I can hardly wait. It really doesn't take much to get me all fired up. Well, I'm off for now. Toodles!

Anne
